Protecting the Second Amendment
- The Second Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sportsmen.
- The Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own firearms, as the Supreme Court affirmed in its Heller ruling.
- The SAFE Act is an unconstitutional law and must be repealed or overturned in court.
All too often, state and federal elected officials chasing media coverage rush to pass ill-conceived and frankly unconstitutional laws to ban certain firearms and stop law abiding citizens from purchasing firearms. In Congress, I will work to protect the Second Amendment by:
- Using the “bully pulpit” of my Congressional office to call for the repeal of the SAFE Act and encouraging vigorous prosecution of individuals using a firearm in the commission of any crime.
- Working to overturn the regulatory overreach used by the Obama administration to attack the Second Amendment.
- Voting against bills that ban law abiding Americans who have not been convicted of a crime from purchasing firearms.
- Supporting common sense legislation like H.R.3722 – the Mental Health and Safe Communities Act of 2015 – to ensure comprehensive reform of our mental health system.
- Only supporting legislation designed to deal with crime and criminals that focuses on crime and criminals – not law abiding citizens.
Anti-gun politicians have and will continue to use every tragedy to further their agenda of disarming law-abiding citizens. They are not interested in passing laws that deal with actual criminals and improving our mental health system. Like in so many other areas, our government needs to focus on finding solutions to the real, root causes of the problems we face. I will be a strong voice for protecting our rights that are protected by the Second Amendment while working to enact real reforms that will lower violence and crime.
